Royal Mail's Tracked 24 and Tracked 48 services look similar on the surface — both tracked, both signed-for options available — and the main visible difference is price. Whether that price difference is worth paying depends entirely on what you're actually shipping.
What each service actually promises
Tracked 24 aims for next-day delivery for items posted before the relevant collection cut-off; Tracked 48 aims for delivery within two working days. Both are aims rather than guarantees — Royal Mail doesn't offer a money-back guarantee tied to the exact day the way some premium next-day services do — but Tracked 24 does consistently outperform Tracked 48 on average delivery speed.
The price difference in practice
Tracked 24 typically costs noticeably more per parcel than Tracked 48 for equivalent weight and size, and at meaningful shipping volume that difference adds up across hundreds or thousands of parcels a month — see our cost-cutting guide for how small per-parcel differences compound at scale.
When Tracked 24 is worth it
Time-sensitive orders, customers who've paid for expedited shipping, or products where a delay genuinely damages the customer experience (perishables, gifts tied to a specific date) justify the extra cost. If speed is a competitive differentiator for your business, it's a reasonable default rather than an occasional upgrade.
When Tracked 48 is the smarter default
For the majority of standard e-commerce orders where customers expect delivery "within a few days" rather than specifically tomorrow, Tracked 48 delivers the same tracking visibility and reliability at a lower cost, with the delivery speed difference rarely being noticed by the customer. Many sellers default to Tracked 48 and reserve Tracked 24 specifically for orders that request or pay for faster shipping.
The label format is identical either way
Whichever service you choose, the physical label is the same 100 × 150mm format printed the same way through Click & Drop — see our Click & Drop setup guide — so switching between services for different orders requires no printer or workflow changes, just a different service selected at checkout.
Same label, either service
Tracked 24 or Tracked 48, our 100 × 150mm direct thermal labels print identically through Click & Drop.
