The darkness setting on a Zebra printer controls how much heat the printhead applies, and therefore how dark the print comes out. It's the most common adjustment after installation, and getting it wrong is a frequent cause of both unreadable barcodes and wasted printhead life, so it's worth dialling in correctly.
What the darkness setting does
Darkness adjusts printhead temperature, which in a direct thermal printer controls how dark the label coating becomes. A higher setting prints darker and bolder; a lower setting prints lighter and finer. It's the primary way to tune print quality on any thermal printer.
Signs it's set too light

Signs it's set too dark
If the print is smudgy, the barcode bars blur together, or fine text fills in, the darkness is too high. Over-dark printing doesn't scan better, it just wastes heat and shortens printhead life, and it can make a barcode harder to read, not easier.
How to adjust darkness
Darkness is adjusted either through the printer's driver settings on the computer, or directly on the printer's control panel or via Zebra's setup utility, depending on the model. Start at the default, print a test label, and step up or down a level at a time until the barcode is solid and the text is crisp.
Scan-testing to confirm
The definitive test is to print a label and scan the barcode with your phone. If it reads cleanly, the darkness is in the right range regardless of how it looks to the eye, because barcodes can look acceptable and still fail to scan, or look imperfect and scan perfectly. The scan is the truth.
