Fading is the most common complaint about direct thermal labels, and it always traces back to the same causes: heat, light and friction acting on a heat-sensitive coating. The good news is that fading is predictable and largely preventable once you understand what accelerates it and how to protect against it.
The three causes of fading
Heat, ultraviolet light and abrasion are the three things that degrade a direct thermal image. Heat re-triggers the coating and darkens the whole label, light bleaches the image, and friction physically wears it away. Most real-world fading is some combination of the three.
Heat: the fastest way to ruin a label
Direct thermal labels darken when heated, so leaving a printed label near a heat source, in a hot vehicle or in direct sun can darken it to the point of illegibility surprisingly quickly. This is also why you should never run a direct thermal label through a laser printer or laminator that applies heat.
Light and UV exposure
Sunlight and fluorescent light both fade the image over time, and a label taped to a window or left on a sunlit shelf will bleach noticeably within weeks. For shipping labels this rarely matters, but for any label that sits in the light, positioning it out of direct sun is the simplest fix.
Abrasion and handling
Friction wears the image away, which is why labels on packages that rub together in transit, or barcodes placed over edges, degrade faster. Attaching the label flat on a clean surface and protecting the barcode from tape and seams keeps it scannable, the same care our barcode guide recommends.
Storage before printing

Protecting printed labels
For labels that need to last, a clear protective sleeve, laminate or a thermal transfer alternative provides real protection. Matching the label to the environment
The cleanest way to prevent fading is to use direct thermal only where it's appropriate: short-lifecycle labels in controlled conditions. Shipping labels, receipts and short-term tags are perfect; anything stored long-term, in the light or near heat belongs on thermal transfer instead.
