Why direct thermal labels fade
Direct thermal labels darken when the printhead heats the coating, and that coating remains heat-sensitive after printing. Exposure to heat, sunlight and even friction will slowly darken or fade the image over time, which is why direct thermal is designed for short-lifecycle labels like shipping, not archival use.
How long a printed label typically lasts
Under normal indoor conditions, a printed direct thermal label stays legible for months, easily covering the days or weeks a shipping label needs to survive. Under harsh conditions, direct sunlight, high heat or abrasion, it can degrade within days or weeks. The lifespan is entirely conditions-dependent.
