A thermal printer's failure mode is gradual. The printhead picks up residue, the rollers lose grip, and one day a label that used to print fine comes out faint or the printer jams mid-run. None of it is a breakdown, it's neglect, and it's almost always reversible with cleaning. The printers that die young are the ones that never get cleaned.
The printhead cleaning routine
The printhead is the most important part to keep clean, and the most delicate. Clean it with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth or swab, gently, never with anything abrasive, and only when the printer is off and cool. The rollers grip the labels and feed them through, and they collect adhesive and dust that make them slip. Change the roll before it runs out

Keep a spare roll on the bench and swap it when you notice it getting low, and check the label path when you load a new roll so the first label feeds straight. It's a two-second habit that prevents a jam at the worst possible moment.
Dial in the darkness once and check it

When to replace the printhead
Printheads are a wear item, and they do eventually need replacing. The signs are persistent faded prints even after cleaning, or a line through every label that won't go away. Keep the firmware and driver current
Outdated drivers cause weird behaviour that looks like a hardware fault, so keep the driver installed and current. If a printer starts misbehaving after a computer or software update, the driver is usually the first thing to check, and reinstalling it fixes more problems than people expect.
