Shopify's own shipping label tool and Royal Mail's Click & Drop portal can feel like competing options, but for most UK stores they end up serving different parts of the same workflow rather than being a strict either/or choice.
What Shopify Shipping offers natively
Shopify Shipping lets you buy and print carrier labels directly from the Shopify admin, calculated against your order's weight and destination, with tracking automatically synced back to the order. Where it's supported, it's genuinely convenient — no export, no separate login, no manual status updates.
Where Royal Mail fits into Shopify's native tools
Royal Mail's direct availability inside Shopify Shipping depends on your store's region and plan, and even where available, coverage doesn't always match everything Click & Drop itself offers — international customs handling, full service-tier selection between Tracked 24 and Tracked 48 (see our comparison guide), or returns configuration. Many UK sellers find gaps that push them back toward Click & Drop or a dedicated connecting app, covered in our Shopify-to-Royal-Mail connection guide.
Why most UK Shopify stores still use Click & Drop separately
Click & Drop gives full control over service selection, business account pricing (see our account types guide), and international customs declarations in a way that's hard to fully replicate through a generic in-admin shipping tool. For stores with meaningful Royal Mail volume, the extra control tends to be worth the slightly less integrated workflow.
Cost comparison
Pricing shown through Shopify's native shipping labels is generally comparable to Click & Drop's retail rates, but Click & Drop's business account discounts (unlocked separately, not automatically applied inside Shopify) can undercut it meaningfully at volume — worth checking directly rather than assuming Shopify's displayed rate is the best available.
Making the two work together rather than picking one
In practice, many stores use Shopify Shipping for carriers where it's fully supported and reach for Click & Drop — via CSV export, an app, or software like our ShipStation guide covers — specifically for Royal Mail. It's less "either/or" and more about routing each carrier through whichever tool actually supports it best for your store.
Whichever tool prints the label
Our 100 × 150mm direct thermal rolls work identically whether the label comes from Shopify Shipping or Royal Mail Click & Drop.
